His bail, however, pertains to the maid’s torture case and he is yet to secure this relief in the rape case. So, Singh may not secure release even after this bail order.

A bench led by Justice B S Chauhan granted bail to Singh to enable him file nomination from Jaunpur constituency and also campaign. He has been granted bail from April 14 to 21.

He had approached SC against a Delhi High Court order that had stayed the bail granted to him by the trial court. The prosecution had highlighted that Singh was involved in several other cases previously lodged and that witnesses in the current cases were under police protection. They added that Singh may threaten witnesses if granted bail.

Dhananjay, a sitting MP from UP’s Jaunpur constituency, was chargesheeted along with his wife, Jagriti. The rape case against Singh had taken a new turn last week with the alleged victim telling a Delhi court that she was not sexually assaulted by the politician.

In the charge sheet against Singh in the rape case, the police alleged that he had repeatedly raped the woman between July 2005 and March 2009.

Singh has been facing trial under various provisions of IPC relating to rape, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

The complaint was filed against Singh by the woman after the MP and his wife Jagriti Singh, a dental surgeon at a government hospital here, were arrested last November in connection with their maid’s murder in which charge sheet was recently filed.

Singh has been charged for various offences under IPC, including destruction of evidence and abetment of the offences of murder and attempt to murder.

Jagriti has been charge sheeted for offences under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 344 (wrongfully confining for 10 or more days), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 201 (destruction of evidence).

The couple was arrested on November 5 last year, in connection with the death of their 35-year-old maid from West Bengal, Rakhi Bhadra.

Police, in its charge sheet, alleged that Jagriti used to “mercilessly beat” her three domestic helps and had “compelled” them to work by holding them captive.

Rakhi’s body, with injury marks on her legs, chest and arms, was recovered from the MP’s South Avenue residence on November 4, 2013.
